It was a treat for Kitchen Design Services to collaborate on a new construction project with an Israeli family in Cupertino. The clients had discerning taste and an impeccable eye for details. The choice of each item was deliberate from paint, drapery, molding, cabinetry, stair accents, rugs, and more.

The overall look is clean traditional with layers upon layers of earthy neutrals and punches of color. There is a soft elegance to the whole house that is very reflective of the lovely family we were working with.

Of course, near and dear to our hearts is the kitchen. Our homeowners chose a slate-stained maple for contrast and richness. To unify the large spaces, the same cabinetry was used at the opposite end by the family room fireplace. And, while going to the ceiling for cabinetry is impressive, sometimes it can be too imposing and impractical. That was the case here, so we capped the upper cabinetry at a still impressive height of nine feet, but was easily accessible for one of our petite homeowners using a ladder.

Finishing touches were creamy marble countertops, Sonoma stone mosaic backsplash, sleek and minimal Legrand light switches and outlets, Mirage nougat hardwood floor, mercury glass pendant lights, and Restoration Hardware furniture.

A full home renovation brought us to together with this family in Los Gatos. The overall vision for the living and kitchen areas was to modernize and create an open floor plan to take advantage of the natural light.

Kitchen Design Services designed a clean, transitional space in an L-shape with a generous island. A simple layout was necessary to facilitate the open floor plan for the great room. While the design is unassuming, we made sure that the pantries were well-designed to maximize storage for a family of four. The corner where the pantry and the drawers meet in particular, needed to be highly efficient and the mechanisms to the swing-outs had to be smooth.

To preserve the symmetry of the cabinets and the clean lines of the kitchen, the clients opted for a Thermador range and Sharpe microwave drawer. Choosing a range meant that the wall cabinets weren’t interrupted and the microwave drawer allowed the family to maximize the counterspace.

Stylistically, a recessed panel door with a slight bevel in Columbia Cabinet Iceberg white was chosen for the perimeters accented by a custom grey painted island. Glass subway tile for the backsplash and a marble-like white quartz for the countertops lend a touch of glamour to the kitchen. And a wide-plank, oak hardwood flooring give the space warmth.

The end result is a bigger, brighter, and more open kitchen that integral to the living areas of the newly remodeled home.

Granada

Kitchen Design Services partnered with a Los Gatos couple that wanted to update their home from having compartmentalized kitchen, dining, and living spaces into an interconnected and open floor plan. The kitchen was cramped and isolated, so Kitchen Design Services’ concept for the new space integrated the dining, kitchen, and bar so that the homeowners would be able to cook together, entertain, and seat six at their new island. To do this, Kitchen Design Services changed the orientation of the kitchen and connected the dining area, giving the couple a larger footprint. This created a more expansive and attractive view of the backyard.

We worked closely on styling options with the clients. They wanted to bring light and freshness in addition to opening up the space, so we chose painted white cabinetry from Ovation Cabinetry for the perimeter topped with a grey quartz. For contrast, the island was a darker stained cabinet finished with a white quartzite counter top. Multi-tonal grey subway tile; blown glass pendant lights; and a rich hardwood floor complete the project.

Gilis

Unlike so many of our recent projects where clients ask us to remove walls and create more open spaces, this busy Almaden Valley family wanted instead to prioritize a neatly defined kitchen and an open sightline to the backyard. To preserve this definition and add some seating, Kitchen Design Services added a peninsula to the kitchen. We wanted to create efficiency and maximum function in such a cozy space, so in addition to adding a peninsula we moved the range from its original zone by the dining doorway to the middle of the kitchen. This creates more counterspace and puts the focus of the kitchen in the center.

No kitchen is complete without a pantry. Because of the size of this kitchen, we had to be a little creative with pantry placement. So, instead of crowding the 36” range and putting the pantry next to it, we decided to place it next to the refrigerator. The corner location allowed for a 12” pullout pantry with great storage.

As wine aficionados, having glassware and beverage storage were a must. So, the French doors leading out into the beautiful backyard and pool were shifted to create enough wall space for a bar. Situating the bar by the door to the backyard was a bonus.

Having a rich granite was also important. To create contrast and highlight the beauty and depth of the stone we chose a recessed door-style with a lightly stepped detail in iceberg white. The simplicity of the cabinetry highlights the deep complexity of the stone. While the styling of the cabinetry is traditional, it’s still very clean and fresh.

Grey glass tile are a subtle and stylish backsplash, while dark hardwood add a touch of sophistication.

Colina

Colina

The owners of this beautiful home in Los Altos Hills have an incredible backyard. To bring the outside in, the back walls of the house connecting living, dining, and kitchen rooms were converted to a series of interconnected glass doors. Kitchen Design Services was brought into the project to design a kitchen that would complement the casual elegance of the evolving space.

The homeowners wanted to incorporate an open gathering space with a clean white transitional door-style. So, we chose a shaker door with a slight inside bevel for the perimeter. To convey the ease between outdoor and indoor living, a stylish, but rustic-feeling walnut island became the centerpiece. The natural beauty was further enhanced with a gorgeous oiled walnut top that the homeowners sourced themselves. The custom iron legs were also a nod to rustic rusticity that nicely compliment the Edison pendants hanging from the coffered ceiling.

We created visual harmony in the expansive space by repeating certain rectangular elements horizontally like the walnut floating shelves, walnut soffit, stainless steel hood, and chunky walnut island countertop.

Hollyhock

Hollyhock

This Morgan Hill home had been lovingly renovated section by section with the exception of the kitchen, which the homeowners were a little challenged by. The previous footprint of the space had the eating and dining in the middle, while prep areas were at opposite ends. This set up often created chaos from well-meaning guests being in the middle of prep and inefficient traffic for home cooks.

We had a very clear mission to design better functionality, allow for multiple cooks, encourage entertainment without sacrificing prep space, and use beautiful materials.

The dining area was relocated to the far side of the kitchen and two islands were added to contain the prep area in a more manageable space. Most people think that you can’t have more than one island unless your space is huge, but it’s really more about designing a kitchen that makes sense for how people live. In this case, we had certain elements that we couldn’t move like the pantry nor did we want to relocate the appliances to radically different places. These limitations severely reduced the counterspace. But, home chefs need prep space and so it was necessary to create it. And, with those parameters, we were able to land on a design that was a little less conventional, but no less beautiful.

The new design features a clean, transitional door style in white for the perimeter to contrast from the previous natural maple. The clients wanted to add a touch of richness, so for the center island we used walnut and chose a raised panel door style with a little more detail. Complementing both the walnut island and white cabinetry are natural walnut floors. Having a deeper toned floor evokes a more polished feel.

Final touches were dramatic quartzite and quartz countertops, sage green glass subway tile backsplash, and sleek pop-out outlets from Legrand.
